This critical (and editorial) stance stresses how much analysis of religion in America has taken a denominational and ecclesial approach (e.g. Protestantism, Catholicism, Judaism), probably because of Puritan beginnings. Over a century or more of debate and commentary we find a significant shift of emphasis “new ways to tell the grand narrative” - towards a thematic and interdisciplinary approach, more interested in examining the cultural diversity of American religion, more engaged with identity and pluralism, and with the interpenetrations between religion and race, gender, class, money, and media.
