Deductive and Inductive Models

Deductive and Inductive Models

Introduction There is a meaningful distinction between the inductive and deductive approaches of report writing. The distinction between the two types of reporting is helpful in setting, conducting and evaluating System Dynamic projects. Both Approaches follow different processes, outcomes and different possibilities for the implementation of two models. Studies have been done on both kinds of methods, and we will evaluate both methods through literature review. Researcher observes that inductive model is appropriate for the real world problems, while deductive modeling is appropriate for literary treatment of organizational phenomena. We will discuss the topic in detail.

Explanation

System dynamic projects aim to solve a problem. It is important to model a problem not a system. Graham observed that the problem must be modeled according to the situation and circumstances than it must be solved. Forrester speaks in general terms focusing on goals and questions to be answered. In order to solve problems related to the origins of System Dynamics projects, System Dynamics tools must be used for managerial decision making. One can rely on Inductive Modeling, because the solution to the specific problem is sought as well as a particular situation serves as the basis for the model (Brummett, 2009).

The System Dynamics approach has been successfully implemented on various applications through inductive way in order to initiate the modeling projects (Richardson, 1996). System Dynamics has shown the ability and usefulness to solve and tackle difficult managerial issues.

Apart from its usefulness, Graham has raised some concerns over the use of this method. He says that “there is a traditional of ruthless rejection of many of the trappings of scientific method if there is a danger of conflict with practical utility”. Most of the times inductive approach to modeling is the most appropriate one to use, but there are certain areas in which it might not be necessary to have an actual or real problem, sometimes even an amusing phenomenon would be sufficient. This method is known as deductive system dynamics modeling. This problem could be better explained by an example that if we shift the focus of attention from managerial decisions and problems to understanding organizational structure, than we will analyze that there is no real problem to start with a System Dynamic Study. Everyone agrees to the fact that organizational behavior is very complex and dynamic phenomenon. Hence, System Dynamics would be best ...
