Research Methods

Introduction

The core aim of research is to provide information. To obtain information we adopt various methods and techniques. Information can be obtained in various ways. When we adopt a systematic approach of acquiring information it is called research. The objective of this paper is to explore the main concept of research and different issues that revolve around this phenomenon.

Research

Research is the process of collection and gathering of data. This data includes variety of information like facts, figures, tables, charts, statements, opinions, ideas, statements, description and so on. This is a systematic, well defined, well devised, well managed and well organized method of obtaining information. (Robson 2002, 34)

In the process of research each and every step is well defined and researcher move from one step to another step at the successful completion. It is the system of collecting data and information for a research project or to solve any research question. (Cooper & Schindler, 2006, 4)

Significance of research for business

There are several advantages that research provides to the business and these advantages and benefits become the core reason to conduct a research process. These reasons are as follows:

To acquire in-depth knowledge

To acquire in- depth and detailed knowledge and information about any issue or topic we conduct research. (Mikkelsen 2005, 99)

Sometimes managers have to make decisions that involve various factors and variables that are complex in nature. In order to reach to the correct decision it is vital to understand the complexity of these variables and to understand complexity it is vital to have deep and correct information. Research fulfils the purpose of providing correct and in-depth information.

To solve any dilemma

An organization suffers from various dilemma and problems. To solve problems and dilemmas that an organization faces in a rational way it is essential to have correct and accurate information. On the basis of the availability of information management can make correct decisions and this information is obtained through the research process. (May 2001, 40)

For example: management may suffer from a dilemma in which they have to make decision regarding launch of a new product. Research would provide a deep insight to the management as to when to launch the product, where to launch the product and how to launch the product. Similarly, research solves different dilemmas of different nature by providing information.

Societal & Professional Issues in research

Research has certain negative aspects. These negative aspects of research are related to both the society and to the profession of research itself. These negative aspects are described below:

Issues of research related to society

Societal issues related to research are discussed below:

Invasion of privacy

Many people consider research a source of disturbance in their privacy. Various techniques of research are there that can prove this statement. For example: many advertising companies place eyeball meter in television sets and many place cameras to gauge people's response and behaviour. (Turabian 1996, 69)

Research without consent

Conducting research on any topic related to any organization or person without having their consent creates ...
