Introduction

Theatre Nurses are nurses whose primary focus is on operations and surgeries. However, a surgical nurse may still have various specialties, including orthopedics, ophthalmology, obstetrics, cosmetics, and other fields that require operations. Theatre Nurse works closely with the operational team. Because of this, the nature of nursing work of the theater is very complicated. Theatre nurses play multiple roles before, during and even after the operation. (Ignatavicius 2008)

Discussion

Theatre Nurses have two main functions. Or it could be a scrub nurse or circulating nurse. Scrub nurses should focus on two main things. One is the patient, and the other is the computer. The scrub nurse is expected to pass the team surgeon requested. This may seem an easy task, but scrub nurses also pass by the experts just to complete this task. They must be very knowledgeable about every piece of equipment, and should never fail with another. (Fitzpatrick 2007)

Although it would not be using the equipment themselves, operating room nurses should also know the uses of each piece of equipment that will help them to respond calmly and immediately to the surgeon's request. They must also be ready to respond and must always be alert in case the surgeon asks for something. It is also responsible for the scrub nurse to account for all pieces of equipment, especially after the operation. The role of scrub nurse in the operations is very large. (Eliopoulos 2006)

In the Outpatient Department, she sees new patients, takes a comprehensive history, conducts a full physical examination, including sigmoidoscopy and rectal biopsy and orders investigations as needed in relation to the patient's diagnosis. Key dispensing initiatives have led to the development of protocols that allow the ANP to prescribe medications in such a way to facilitate full case management of inpatients. (Baer 2007)

This ANP also teaches advanced clinical practice in a joint appointment with City University. Other responsibilities include administrating the budget, hiring and supervising the nursing staff, conducting employee performance appraisals, retaining employees, and coordinating interdisciplinary resident care teams. (Fitzpatrick 2007)

DONs have direct responsible for the clinical activities of preventing and controlling infections in the LTC facility, promoting client safety, and keeping the facility in compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies. In light of the current nursing shortage, qualifications to be a DON are often based on experience in geriatric nursing and LTC rather than on the college degree held. (Eliopoulos, 2006) However, there is a growing trend to employ nurses with a baccalaureate or master's degree whenever possible. The National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration in Long-Term Care offers a certification examination for RNs in DON positions. (Ignatavicius 2008)

Advanced practice nurses (APNs) are RNs who have received additional education, especially in diagnosis and treatment of disease. APNs generally hold a master's degree and must have a national certification in a specialty area. Most APNs working in LTC are nurse practitioners with education in gerontology.
