Introduction

The two critical determinants of organizational success are motivation and performance management. Only if the employees are motivated they will perform well. Since the performance of the employees plays an immense deal on organizational success, it is essential to keep the employees motivated to enable them to perform well. Therefore, it can be clearly said that all three have a relationship with one another and organizational success cannot be achieved in the absence of performance management and motivation.

Discussion

Creating opportunities for employees to succeed is beneficial for organizations. Employee motivation can improve performance, increase job satisfaction, and create loyal employees. The result of a reward must be desirable for the employee to reach this goal. An example of a reward can be a promotion. In the employee's mind, obtaining the promotion will motivate to work harder and tackle any obstacles that come in the way. It is highly important that employer constantly motivated his employees, in order to achieve better performance and achieve goals efficiently. As employees look up to their employers as mentors due to the fact that the employer or supervisor is present throughout the day and the employees spends a considerable amount of time with them (Martin, 2008).

However, several theories have been researched to link a connection between employee motivation, satisfaction, and performance. The early theories of motivation had a good meaning to them however; these theories were not supported by valid research. Businesses today do recognize Maslow's theory of needs and its recognition is attributed to the simplicity of understanding and the logical values of the theory. Contemporary theories of motivation are more related to today's thinking in an organization. In today's research on theories, the expectancy theory is proven to address all the issues in the organization. Examples include tardiness, absent employees, employee retention, and productivity. As there are concerns with what motivates a person, Mitchell states, “Employees are demanding a more fulfilling job and organizations are hiring more people with different backgrounds an employee is motivated to behave a certain way when he or she believes that a reward will be earned and personal goals also can be fulfilled. Examples of rewards can be an increase salary or bonus leading to a possible promotion, and this may have helped to achieve the employee's personal goal. The result of a reward must be desirable for the employee to reach this goal. An example of a reward can be a promotion. In the employee's mind, obtaining the promotion will motivate to work harder and tackle any obstacles that come in the way. It is highly important that employer constantly motivated his employees, in order to achieve better performance and achieve goals efficiently (Ian, 2001).
