Introduction

One of the biggest concerns of the present government of the United States is to strengthen the national defense. There have been several attempts by the government to reinforce certain measures which support the primary cause of national security. In this paper I will be discussing past and present conditions of the robotics industry in the United States. There have been several ups and downs in the particular industry over the past decades. These variations have considerable impact on the development of technologies and the utilization of machines in manual work. This industrial analysis is a part of my project on robotics and the possibility of their adoption in the military. Actually this idea is supported by the concept of strengthening the national defense against terrorism and international threats.

Discussion

Japan is considered as the central hub of robot technology. The implication of artificial intelligence has open doors for modernized technological development. However, these advancements are still on testing phase and the possibilities of commercial manufacturing of robots are yet to be explored. However, in the United States robots are used for industrial purposes and are replacing human or manual labor. The concept of using robots for militarily purposes indicates high level of sophisticated artificial intelligence. Scientists and engineers are constantly working to find affordable technological means to introduce robots in human routine. Introducing robots in military actions is definitely an appealing concept which has been supported through media and science fiction movies. Therefore, it is important to conduct an industrial analysis to identify possibilities of these established conceptions.

US Robotics Industry Overview

Annual sales for industrial robots have grown in the U.S. at a rate of 25% according to statistics of 1981 to 1992. The increase in this rate is due to diverse factors. First, there are more people in the industry who have knowledge of technology and its potential for useful applications. Second, robotics technology will improve in the coming years so that will make robots more user friendly, easier to interface with other hardware and simpler to install. Third, the market grows, economies of scale are predictable on the production of robots to provide a reduction in unit price, which would make the draft robot applications easier to justify. Fourth is expected to suffer robotics market expansion beyond large companies, which has been the traditional customer for this technology, and reach the medium-sized companies, small and why not, the micro. These circumstances give us a noticeable increase in customer base for robots. Robotics is a technology with future and also for the future.

If current trends continue, and if some of the research studies in the laboratory under way finally become a viable technology, the robots of the future will be mobile units with one or more arms, multi-sensor capabilities and the same power data processing and calculation that large current computers.
