Rogerian Essay on Family Guy: Funny or Inappropriate, or Both

Introduction

The purpose of this study is to expand the boundaries of our knowledge by exploring some relevant facts and figures relating to the Rogerian argument on a Television show i.e. Family Guy. In this paper, we will use Rogerian Argument to persuade your opposition that our position is indeed valid. In other words, the audience for this paper will be those who oppose our position. The purpose of this T.V show is to highlight the events that are currently happening in the world. This show is famous for its uniqueness of switching from the main plot of the story to highlight the previous events. The flash back does not last for too long; still it entertains the audience by presenting gags that contribute to the unfamiliar rhythm of the episodes (Dhaenens, pp. 2-14).

According to most of the critics, the show lacks in story line, arguing that the show is overfilled with unnecessary material. However, many people also contradict this argument by referring to the episodes that includes a continuation story lasting for few episodes (for example Stewie's many attempts at trying to kill his mom are a storyline in itself). As a general perception, this show has been rated as controversial because of its content that audience may find funny, disturbing, or both.

Discussion & Analysis

The argument being highlighted in this essay is whether or not the show should continue to be shown on Television (Zappan, pp. 95-113). With reference to the transmission of this show on Television, they are different point of view that people hold about the publicity of the show. Some part of the audience believe that sarcasm should be incorporated in the plot of the story while other believe that the show crosses its limit by portraying jokes that should not be shown publically, or in other words, the show is imposing a negative effect on the society by showing such content. Should the show remain on T.V? It's hard to say.

The show has six main characters: Peter Griffin his wife, Lois Griffin ; and their three children: Meg Griffin, a college misfit; Chris Griffin, the mentally-slow art student; Stewie Griffin, who abandons his plot for world domination to kill Lois ;and Brian the alcoholic dog who has the most sense in the family. These six characters mesh together well, and feed off of each others humor to make the show funny. The show presents new guest characters in each episode. These characters are not limited to celebrities only, but invites characters from a wide range of disciplines i.e. sports figures, religious groups, stereotypes of different classes and races. People can find these stereotypes as either humorous, inappropriate, or both (Dhaenens, pp. 2-14).

What makes the show so controversial is the way that the characters act toward each other, and the numerous jokes and flashbacks that make fun of the many different stereotypes. For example in one of the episodes the show makes fun of Mike Tyson ...
