Introduction

Different people suffer from different crippling diseases, sickness and illness. An individual can suffer either from physical or mental illness. Whenever an individual suffer from any sort of illness he or she relies on health service providers. Various members of the health care setting play their part in improving mental and physical well being of an individual. One of the most significant components of health care service providers are nurses.

“Constant attention by a good nurse may be just as important as a major operation by a surgeon”. These are the words of Dag Hammarskjold truly expressing importance of role of a nurse. Nurses play their integral role in facilitating a patient effectively and efficiently. Nursing interventions include nurses; they are referred to preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic and educational. They are traditionally provided by a nurse or a paramedic by delegation (nursing aid, caregiver, childcare assistant, medical and psychological assistance to the closest collaborators of nurses or other health professional) from a person or group of people. Nursing are rooted in a theoretical knowledge and practical skills and seek to maintain or improve the health of the person or group in its dimensions biological , physiological , physical (anatomical and functional), psychological and social and prevention of potential violations thereof. (Buchan, 2002)

With the rapid development of technology various industries are adopting tech-savvy approach; field of medicine also has approached modish and innovative tricks to improve their services. One of these innovative ideas is of psychiatric nursing. Psychiatric nurses lend a hand in mental health treatment of patients. The nub of this paper is to reveal core functions and responsibilities of psychiatric nurses. What measures can be taken to broaden the horizons of this field. The most essential aspect of this paper is to find out whether presence of psychiatric nurses is important or not. The vital objective of this paper is to systematically conduct this research and present the findings in an appropriate way so that this work can be considered as an indispensible contribution in the field of psychiatric nursing.

Psychiatric nurse

In general, psychiatric nursing can be defined as the special branch of nursing that deals with patient who suffer from mental illness. A nurse can be classified as a psychiatric nurse on the basis of role of the patient as compared to the location of a patient. It also can be assessed by the fact that the patient is suffering from some sort of psychiatric illness. (Lyons, 2009)

The role of a psychiatric nurse is to amalgamate art of human behavior with the framework of science and medicine and present this in nursing practice. A psychiatric nurse coordinates with other medical staff and interdisciplinary health treatment teams for the mental and emotional well being of a patient.
