Research Question

How do a Turkish EFL learner and another Turkish ESL learner articulate future expressions? What is their interlanguage representation of this?

Literature Review

Slinker, in his book, Interlanguags, published in 1972 introduced the term “Interlanguage”. He also used the term second language to express the use of a language by someone who cannot use it proficiently. Or one may use the second language for the language which a person uses in addition to the primary or mother tongue. Therefore, Interlanguage means the study and analysis of different parameters of second language. Where, second language can be anyone, thought, it must be a second language to the individual being studied (Selinker, 1972).

After the introduction of the term, interlanguage studies became more widely known, and many other linguists started to delve deep into the topic. Bardovie-Harlig, in her book, Monopolizing the future: How the go-future breaks into will's territory and what it tells us about SLA published in 2004, analyzes the ways through which a person learns to speak the second language (Ortega, 2009). Through her research, she found that learners learn a second language through several stages. She named the first stage as the use of pragmatic tools. In this stage the learner uses the flow of time to speak, or they describe things while focusing on the way the events happened. The second stage is named, lexical; in this stage the user becomes able to use verbs in his/her spoken second language (Bardovi-Harlig, 2005). In the third stage, the learner starts to use and focus on the morphemes of that language. By breaking the learning stages the author first identified the levels of each case being studied and then compared them with English as a foreign language learner to come up with authentic results (Collins, 2002).

Similarly, Bardovie-Harlig in her another book entitled, The future of desire: Lexical futures and modality in L2 English future expression published in 2005, studies lexical futures and modality. In this book she focused on four prominent issues regarding the use and the emergence of lexical futures. Construction, order of emergence, timing and expression of lexical futures were the centre of focus in this book.
