Security Threat Groups/Gangs

Following are the key gangs that are realized nationally for their participation in organized violence and crime, each gang is symbolized in Florida's prison system population.

The Aryan Brotherhood

Short form of Aryan Brotherhood is “AB”. It is a prison gang that originated in 1967 at California Department of Corrections at San Quentin. The Aryan Brotherhood is divided into two main groups, first is in Federal Prison system and on the other hand the second gang is consists of various fraction of the brotherhood in number of state prison system, especially in California, that is freely associated to a lesser or greater degree. Supremacist ideology is displayed by almost members of the Aryan brotherhood. (David Grann, 2004)

They are the only one involved in the methamphetamine trade. Member's crime of Aryan Brotherhood gang is their first priority and secondary is the racial hatred. Other white gangs in the prison were also spawned by Aryan Brotherhood. Tattoos are sometime the identification mark of Aryan Brotherhood gang differentiating them according to their state and region. Nicknames are also given to them just like Alice Baker, Alice, the brand and Tip. (Holthouse, 2006)

The Mission of this gang is to provide protection to whicte individuals from Hispanic and black groups, especially from the Mexican Mafia. Aryan Brotherhood was established in California but it has increasing and spreading throughout the Federal prison System and the entire nation. Aryan brotherhood's leadership in recent times hit with the Federal R.I.C.O Indictment. It is expected by the Lae officials that the gang will maintain a low Profile and will contract their criminal activities to groups like peni(Public Number One) and Nazi Loweiders.

Black Guerrilla Family

George Jackson established Black Guerrilla Family and it was originated in 1966. This gang was called as the Blacj Vanguard or the Black Family, at the same time this gang was associated with Black Mafia.

Some members of Black Guerilla Family were formally linked with the Black Liberation Army, Weatherman Underground organization and the Symbionese Liberation. Black Guerilla Family is the gang which is most political oriented as compared to the other gangs. This gang was formed as a Maoist/ Leninist/Marxist revolutionary organization with the specific goals to eradicate racism, overthrow the U.S government and struggle to maintain the dignity in the prison. Black Guerrilla Family has its member spreader nationwide in federal prison and both the states. The BGF is strongly organized on both West and East coasts. The gang has experienced a decline and in the membership and strength in 90s, Black Guerrilla Family has recently recognized and gained substantial growth and power because of its alignment with the Bloods, Black Gangster Disciples and 415s. Currently this gang is having conflict within the gang which is between the old and new membership in the federal custody. (Ramon Mendoza, 2008)
