Abstract

The constructs of Self esteem and dating are closely linked. Motivation is the urging and the exhortation that comes from within to perform some act, such as dating in our case. On the other hand, the concept of dating is rather new where males and females meet to engage in various relationships, such as sexual or sensual. Most of the dating motivation came from the intimacy goals of the individuals. These goals included self-disclosure, open communication, and mutual dependence. Yet, men and women were likely to have different motivations for engaging in dating relationships. While women preferred dating for providing courtship, men pursued dating to get recreation and pleasure from the relationship. Then, this suggests that the intimacy goals are more likely to be pursued by men than women. Furthermore, these individuals with intimacy goals are also expected to control the dating relationships. Finally, dating violence was also motivated by special occurrences, such as the sexual or non-sexual jilting. Yet, it was clear that those who engaged in dating violence were not necessarily proponents of dating violence. Still, it was clear that those who came from households where there was domestic violence were more likely to engage in dating violence.
