Should Women Be Paid As Much as Men in Sports (Against Argument)

Introduction

Women in sports have indeed come a long way. Years ago it was socially unacceptable for women to do anything other than cook and clean. Men dominated the work place and the sports industry. But eventually women got fed up with being treated less significant than their male counterparts and began protesting. Not until the mid-1950s and early 1960s did nondiscriminatory employment become a strong social concern. While women were just beginning to make a name for them, the government began regulating Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) by passing a series of laws, in an attempt to correct social problems of interest to particular groups of workers, including women. EEO laws have made a major impact on women in all industries, but especially on women in sports. While EEO laws focused on non-discrimination, affirmative action went beyond providing equal employment opportunity. Affirmative action (AA) required employers to become proactive and develop a plan to correct areas of past discrimination. However, both EEO laws and AA have paved the way for women to not only play sports, but to also coach sports and to obtain top sport management positions. Today, girls and women are doing a little bit of everything: playing, coaching, and managing sports programs. This paper will first analyze EEO laws and AA and then attempt to trace the impact that these regulations have had on women in sports since they were first established. After careful analysis of their impact, this paper will then determine if this system continues to benefit women today. Lastly, this paper seeks to determine whether or not some of these laws need restructuring or abolishing based on their effectiveness and benefits to women in sports today.

Sports activities such as tennis, golf, basketball and bowling are not restricted to guys; women contend in teams of their own or together with the men. Women generally have equivalent possibilities to play sports as men, but, too often, the settlement is anything but equivalent. In most cases, the men are creating a lot more cash than their women alternatives. That must not be unexpected because male's sports generally achieve more press visibility, higher work and larger volumes of support dollars.
