Significant Event that Occurred after 1945: War on terror in the Pakistani region

Introduction

Out of the cataclysmic struggle of World War II came a Cold War that projected a bipolar superpower struggle onto the world's continents and regions, rendering them potential battlefields: swampy jungles, desert planes, ocean floors, polar expanses and the new high frontier of outer space. Advances in the technology of warfare, most especially the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), also globalized the battlefield. Establishing accurate geographic measurements of the figure of the earth became an imperative of Cold War military geographic intelligence (Ahmed, 2010).

There has been major historical event that took place after the World War II. However, the war on terror is a unique and one of a kind series of on-going events that started with a devastating attack on United States of America. Since, then there seems to be no stopping to this contemporary war that United States is into and fighting at various war zones. There are great events that took place at places like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan. Countless people have lost their lives along with many on-field soldiers of Pakistan. However, war on terror is not being fought against countries, but it is against a group of Muslim extremists “Taliban”.

The Taliban is a religious and military movement that seized control of large portions of Afghanistan in the mid-1990s. While the Taliban was initially seen as a stabilizing force in war-torn Afghanistan, the movement's embrace of a radical form of Islam quickly made it a pariah in the international community. The Taliban's hosting of the terrorist organization al Qaeda eventually led to its ouster by the United States in late 2001, following the attacks of September 11. Since 2004, however, the Taliban has managed to mount a successful insurgency campaign against both Western forces and the Afghan government, extending its reach not only into the formerly peaceful northern region of Afghanistan but also into the tribal regions of northwestern Pakistan (Lafraie, 2009, pp. 550-572).

Pakistan relations with Taliban

Afghanistan soon became a known haven for a significant number of Islamist terrorist organizations, harbored by the Taliban by 1996. In 1991, bin Laden himself had moved to Sudan, before returning to Afghanistan in 1996, where he began to more closely integrate his movement with that of the Taliban. Ironically, a number of groups, such as Hezb-e-Islami, founded by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who had received CIA training, plus the majority of U.S. and Saudi financial assistance, as funneled through Pakistan, began to turn against American interests.

A tribe by the name of pahstuns lives in the noth-werstern side of Pakistan along with other major population lives in the southern Afghanistan. However, it had various known personalities, and Omar was one of the known personalities of the Pashtun group. However, there was a disturbance in the region when the soviet started invading Afghanistan in 1979, which lead to a great ...
