Introduction

The movie “Slumdog Millionaire” has been very famous for its story line and is also proclaimed as a “feel good movie of the year” by many film critics. The film is directed by Danny Boyle, and it based on the Indian novel Q&A written by Vikas Swarup (Swarup, 2008). The film has been appreciated by a lot of viewers and has also managed to collect eight Academy Awards which include, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture. The story revolves around a young boy named Jamal, and belongs to a Muslim community. The film depicts Jamal as a poor young boy, who does not belong to a well of family and works for his living. The movie also portrays a scenario where its shows the tough struggle and several efforts of Jamal, in order to meet his childhood love.

Discussion

The movie starts with a shot where Jamal is sitting in a chair as a contestant of a famous show called “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” in front of the famous host of the show and surrounded by a large crowd. The conditions portrayed in the first scene of the movie are quite intense, as Jamal is only one question away from winning the grand prize of 20million rupees. In the movie Jamal plays a very strong character that has undergone many difficulties during his life for example he was separated from his mother and his two best friends, his beloved Latika and his brother Salim (www.domlife.org). As children Salim was essential for survival of Jamal, always inventing new tricks for food and money. First, the two steal just to eat, and then cheat tourists to make money the easy way.

The two brothers return to Mumbai to find Latika, against the wishes of Salim, and we see them work more or less honestly for the first time. Jamal is growing and begins to stand up against his brother. Every correct answer given by Jamal helps in describing the slums of India. The slums shown in the movie are flooded with garbage and dust and each correct answer of Jamal describes the dramatic reality which revolves around the slums. The existence of Jamal is dotted with a myriad of dramatic episodes, between violent and brutal cold, rain and dirt, neglect, exploitation, loneliness, ridicule, imprisonment; torture to his safety and physical integrity.

The movie also covers an important issue that exists almost in every society. The issue discussed in the movie is that how poor population of the country are suspiciously treated if they are doing well. The plotline of the movie revolves around the brutal interrogation of Jamal at the police station, where he is grilled and being interrogated in search of trick, as the policemen and the host of the movie find it unbelievable for a young child like Jamal to answer all the questions accurately.
