Smoking Banned

Introduction

This paper will help define why I think the ban on smoking in public places is a positive decision. When looking at three aspects such as: the link between cigarette smoking and cancer, the health effects that cigarette smoking has on a smokers body, and how second hand smoke is harmful to others, helps show that the ban on smoking in public places is a positive decision. The arguments between smokers and non smokers, why it is so hard to quit smoking, and the side effects of quitting will also be discussed. Also the question of is there a safe way to smoke cigarette will be discussed.

Analysis

One reason why I think cigarette smoking should be banned in public places is there is a substantial amount of evidence between cigarette smoking and cancer. According to the American Cancer Society 2008 [ACS] lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America. Also according to ACS smoking accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths, and it is a major cause of the following cancers lung, voice box, mouth, throat, bladder, and the esophagus. Also, in the article, Tobacco use and early Cancer mortality, (1995) which explains the link between smoking and lung cancer, it is said that in most types of cancer cigarette smoking is the greatest contributor, and is defined as responsible for half or more of all deaths. Cigarettes kill more Americans then alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicides, and illegal drugs combined. Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals many which are carcinogens, substances which cause cancer. ACS (2008) Another reason why smoking should be banned is the effects it has on ones body. I believe smoking is not only harmful to people who smoke, but other people also. Now not all health problems relating to smoking result in death which the ACS (2008) says smoking affects a person's body in many ways other ways such as: harming nearly every organ in the body, and causing many diseases. The ACS (2008) also states smoking can raise your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. In a journal article Bans Bans Good for the Heart (2006) which describes the link between smoking and heart attacks says in Pueblo Colorado the ban on smoking helped to reduce the local heart attack rate by 27% in a year and a half. The article Smoking effects the heart (1962) said not only does smoking have one strike against it for the cause of cancer, but now another for the effects it has on the heart. Smoking also damages your lungs by damaging the airways and small air sacs in your lungs. Emphysema is another health effect which can be caused by smoking which is irreversible, can not be stopped and causes a shortage of breath. Smoking can also cause or worsen poor blood flow in arms and legs which can limit everyday activities such as ...
