In some other high-risk sectors such as manufacturing systems, quality or process improvement programs have been used successfully for over decades. Some typical quality programs are the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9000, the philosophy of total quality management, Toyota Production System (TPS), lean manufacturing, and recently, especially the Six Sigma program. These benefits of Six Sigma are achieved through the use of a systematic approach to define measure, analyze, improve and control processes (DMAIC). Six Sigma projects stay on track through the establishment of deliverables in each phase of the DMAIC process. One of the benefits of Six Sigma methodology in other process improvement programs is that the use of statistical tools in Six Sigma projects allows professionals to accurately identify problems that hinder the process and demonstrate the improvements based on objective data.
