Social Dominance Orientation and Relation to Economic Groups

Introduction

In sociology, elite is a group of relatively that is dominant within a large society, having a privileged status perceived as being envied by others of a lower line of order. If such an elite wields political power, it almost invariably puts itself in a position of leadership, whether it is expected or volunteered, and often subjects the holders of elite status to pressure to maintain that leadership position as part of the status.

The social world and modern societies are divided into the fields. They are hierarchical, and dynamics comes from the competition struggles being waged by social workers to occupy the dominant positions. Dominant group is the one that controls the distribution and appropriates surpluses, has, therefore, economic power (feudal lords, strong landowners, industrial bourgeoisie, and financial bourgeoisie) and controls the political power (Levin, 2002). The industrial revolution is a period of change that is characterized by a significant break in America with existing legacy systems, whether both social and economic power. This period was marked by the bourgeois revolutions that occurred in general on this continent, and that marked the fate of recent history.

The modern societies are characterized by the existence of multiple social relations of domination. Social dominance orientation (SDO) is a personality variable that provides social and political attitudes. It is widely applied Social Psychological scale. SDO is conceptualized, as a measure of individual differences in the levels of discrimination and domination-based group, that is to say, it is a measure of the preference of an individual to hierarchy in any given social system. The concept of SDO as a measurable distinctive difference is a product of social dominance theory. The Theory of Social Dominance is a theory of social psychology, social dominance theory proposes to understand how and why social hierarchies are constructed and maintained (Michalos, 2002). One of the basic postulates of this theory is that in every society is a social hierarchy with a hegemonic group at the top of the dominated groups at the base and a struggle between dominant and dominated groups to maintain or improve their position within the social hierarchy.

Here in this paper I am going to discuss dominance of economic groups in society. The social domain is characterized by a genuine desire to oppress others for the sole purpose of exercising power over them. Social dominance orientation is an individual difference variable characterized by "the desire that our group dominate and be superior to other". "Some people deserve more than others," "If we succeed in life, sometimes it is necessary to pass over other groups." The theory attempts to explain the "general nature of prejudice and oppression based on groups." Men tend to have a more high social dominance than women (Sidanius, 1999). The former tend to have more power thanks to their income, occupational level and many other factors. Social dominance orientation closely resembles the authoritarian ...
