Art Therapy Definition

Art therapy is the creative use of various expressive media to help a person deal with thoughts, emotions, life changes, personal issues, and conflicts often buried deep within his subconscious. If the patient can externalize his feelings for examination and reflection, he may discover meaning and insight, release, and transformation. Such discovery enhances integration of the whole person and supports growth, change, and the healing process.

Creative activities may include drawing, painting, sculpting, and making collages (from cuttings from recycled newspapers, magazines, catalogs, greeting cards, or calendars). Mask making is a powerful and popular form of expression used commonly in groups or as individual healing rituals. Puppetry is another form of artistic therapy. It requires fashioning of a hand puppet, several puppets or marionettes, and perhaps even a stage, scenery, or puppet theater. Photography, videography, and computer-generated art are newer forms of art therapy.

Some conditions in which art therapy is useful are posttraumatic stress disorder, substance abuse and addictions, catastrophic illness (cancer, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), chronic pain or disease, prolonged hospitalization or treatment, extensive surgery, loss of voice (through surgery, tracheostomy, intubation), aging and loss of roles, and chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome.

Description

The use of art or play with children may take many forms, but it generally occurs in a permissive, therapeutic environment in which the child is allowed to express feelings and concerns through the medium of play or art. Markers, crayons, puppets, dolls, paints and are used. The therapeutic use of art or play by child life workers, occupational therapists, or nurses should be distinguished from art of play therapy conducted by a trained art or play therapist. The former commonly takes place in the routine preparation of children for surgery or other painful procedures. It is meant as a psychoeducational or didactic technique in which expression is encouraged and misinformation may be detected and corrected. One or two sessions are common, but children with repeated exposure to aversive procedures may engage in frequent use of art or play to express their feelings.

Art or play therapy, in contrast, refers to a therapeutic endeavor in which a relationship with a trained therapist is fostered and conflicts are uncovered and resolved. Therapy is usually undertaken with disturbed children and may continue for several months.
