Spiritual Needs Assessment

Introduction

The spiritual needs assessment helps the health care providers in ensuring that the patient that they are dealing with is healthy mentally. For ensuring the mental health, the health care providers should make sure that they conduct a proper interview with the patient and make sure as to how the spiritual aspects of life have impacted the patient. This is the assessment that the health care providers should make sure that they conduct in the best manner and the patients are able to answer them comfortably.

Assessment

The following assessment will be held with a patient to assess the spiritual need of the patient.

Do you practice religion? Do you believe in God?

Do you follow or practice any spiritual path?

Do you pray? If yes, when do you pray and in what manner?

Are you a part of a religious community?

What importance does religion have in your life?

The assessment mentioned above will prove to a basis for assessing the spiritual needs of a person. The person conducting the spiritual needs assessment should be able to make sure that the patient that he is dealing with is comfortable with him and the questions that he is asking. He should also be able to make sure that he develops a comfort zone with the person first and then should go on with the interview and should assess the person spiritually.

Although spiritual assessment is not difficult, but there are people who are not comfortable with discussing their beliefs with other people. They do not like talking about how they practice religion and what they do that categorizes them as a believer. This is the reason that the person who is conducting the assessment should be an influential person so that the assessment is completed in an effective manner.
