Abstract

In this research we try to explore the notion of economic recession in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on corner stores, also called convenience stores & its survival strategy during times of recession. This research also analyzes many aspects of supermarkets & other big retail stores & how they survive during the time of recession & tries to gauge its effect on the business of convenience stores & analyzes how corner stores survive against the rivals i.e. supermarkets in the same area during recession.



Chapter 1: Introduction

Background of the Research

The global recession which overtook the economies a couple of years had devastating effects on numerous businesses across the world. Many businesses have not even fully recovered from the loss as yet. Big businesses were crushed & small businesses had to completely vanish in some cases. In these tough times, some businessess applied intelligent survival strategies in order to overcome the disastrous effects of the recession & live the tough competition posed by rivals.

Investors get a lot of information on a daily basis, ranging from business cash flows news to news about economic fundamentals. Investors in this process of gaining information update their expectations of future economic growth, inflation, & discount rates, which affect asset prices. (Cleeren 2007, 182 -194)

However, some macroeconomic data is more relevant than others, & the same information can have different meanings in different phases of the cycle. In addition, the same information may have different effects on various assets & even for the same asset different effect on the return volatility.

Like any other business enterprise, corner stores too had to undergo a rigorous competition & tough time from supermarkets located in the same locality during times of economic recession. In this paper we are going to investigate the survival strategies that corner stores/ convenience stores applied in order to last the contention posed by supermarkets & how it overcame the effects of recession(Cleeren 2007, 182 -194 ).

Rationale

The impact of a recession on independent retailer running convenience store that have annual sales substantially less than the Fortune 1000 & that are not public companies is similar to large businesses.
