Two or more events are mutually exclusive or disjoint if they cannot occur simultaneously that is the occurrence of an event automatically prevents the occurrence of another event (or events). For example, a coin can only happen to come out heads or tails but not both at once, this means that these events are exclusive. Two or more events are not exclusive or joint; it is possible that both occur. This does not necessarily indicate that these events must occur simultaneously. For example, if we consider a game of dominoes score at least one white and one six, these events are not mutually exclusive because they may leave the six white.

When A and B are two events with positive probability, we have seen that in general the conditional probability of event B given event A is different from the probability of event B. However, when one has the equation: P (B / A) = P (B) is particularly important because this means that the event B is not dependent or independent of Event A. That is, no matter whether it happened or not event A given that the occurrence or nonoccurrence of the event A does not affect B.

In this context, the study of the independence of events or experiments is to investigate whether the events or experiences are linked or occur independently of each other (One can reasonably think that the drinking of alcohol and cause an accident that are not independent from each other). The odds have built their definition of independence from the notion of independence in statistics: a statistical nature is independent of sex, for example, if the distribution of character is the same whether we take the total population, the males or females.
