Stem Cell

Stem cells are unique cells capable of differentiating into specialized cell types when required. Stem cells aid in the healing process of injuries by regenerating the lost areas of the body. Broken bones, ripped muscles, cut or scratched skin and other possible damages are covered with stem cells of the body. They regenerate forming into the specialized cells to make up for the loss.

Stem Cell Research

Stem units are the ones which can evolve into any kind of body cell encompassing the units of body- fluid, liver, mind, sinews, and numerous more (Baertschi & Mauron, 2010). They are discovered in mature individual skeletal part marrow, embryos, fetuses, and body-fluid from the umbilical cord (Bertha, 2007). Stem cell study is the newest advancement in biotechnology which displays how an organism evolves from a lone cell and how wholesome units restore impaired units in mature individual organisms.

Types of Stem Cell

Stem cells are further categorized in terms of their sources; embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are derived from a four to five days old human embryo, which further divide and specialize to form different parts organs and other body structures. Adult stem cells, or somatic stem cells, are found within different types of tissues. These remain in a dormant state for years until stimulated by a disease or injury. U.S. doctors began treating for the first time a patient with human embryonic stem cells.

Embryonic stem cells are those that form part of the inner cell mass of embryo 4-5 days of age and have the ability to form all cell types of an adult organism (Manninen, 2007). A key characteristic of embryonic stem cells is that they can stay (in the embryo or under certain conditions of cultivation) indefinitely, forming a cell to divide identical to them, and maintaining a stable population of stem cells. There are experimental techniques which can obtain embryonic stem cells without involving embryo destruction.

History of Stem Cell Research

The history of stem cell research is an ordinary beginning, around 1850, with the discovery that some cells could generate other types of cells (Solo & Gressberg, 2007). In the early 1900's the first real stem cells were discovered when it was found that some cells could produce blood cells.

In 1958, a discovery in the human immune system led to the discovery of new methods to transplant bone marrow and stem cell use. These have now demonstrated its potential to form many different kinds of cell types and tissues, which could be useful in repairing organs ravaged by disease or accidents.
