Reliability is the ability of a test to yield the same results each time the test is repeated. A bathroom scale is a good example of a reliable testing instrument. Each time an individual steps on the scale, an accurate body weight is shown. An individual can step on the scale one hundred times in a day and yield the exact same results. Measurement techniques of collecting data are evaluated on the basis of reliability. Subject matter affects reliability of measurement techniques. Supposedly neutral subjects will be easier to measure than those which seem incriminating. Data on a subject like food expenditures are relatively easy to get. When people are faced with answering questions on topics like sexual behavior, sexual orientation, or prejudice, however, they may be less reliable in their responses. Techniques can be modified to compensate for subjects who are more challenging.
