Introduction

Supermax is the name given to prisons or unit of a prison of high security in United States and other countries. The first form of such a correctional facility appeared in Australia in 1975, when the district "Katingal" was built within the Correctional Centre of Long Bay Correctional Centre in Sydney. Dubbed the "electronic zoo" by inmates, "Katingal" was a high security prison for prisoners to sensory deprivation, with 40 cells with electronically controlled gates, its surveillance cameras and no window.
