Introduction

A fish snare is an apparatus for catching fish either by impaling them in the mouth or, more seldom, by snagging the body of the fish. Fish hooks have been employed for centuries by angler to catch new and saltwater fish. In 2005, the fish snare was selected by Forbes as one of the peak twenty devices in the annals of man. Fish snares are commonly adhered to some pattern of line or lure device which connects the caught fish to the fisherman. There is a tremendous variety of fish hooks in the world of fishing. Sizes, designs, forms, and components are all variable counting on the intended reason of the fish hook. Fish hooks are constructed for a variety of reasons from general angling to exceedingly restricted and focused applications. Fish hooks are conceived to contain diverse kinds of artificial, processed, dead or reside baits (Bait fishing); to proceed as the base for artificial representations of fish prey (Fly fishing); or to be attached to or integrated into other devices that comprise fish prey (Lure fishing).

During the late stages of spring, streams around Lake Tahoe teemed with trout. Washoe men and women were skilled fishers, and they tailored their techniques to suit different environments. In areas with dense riparian vegetation they bound tops of trees across the water to create shady areas that attracted fish. They diverted streams to create small pools in which fish could be caught, and built dams in swift moving water to form ponds where fish could be more easily seen. In many instances families fished together, particularly during seasonal runs. They used bone hooks, spears of willow with bone arrowheads, conical baskets, and nets woven of plant fibers. Some fishers used two-pronged spears, which they employed from a constructed perch above the water.

Fishing certainly isn't what it used to be. The fish are the same and the act of fishing is the same, but it used to be inexpensive and a lot of fun. There was a time, not so terribly long ago, when that was all that was needed; that, and the ability to outsmart that linker bass that always remained just short of my hook. But like many things that were important to me so long ago, memories give birth to feelings that demand we relive some part of the past. After many years of not fishing, that urge to once again relive those days of summer filled my thoughts, thoughts of all the fun I used to have, of bright sunlit days, of images on the waves of a sparkling lake, and the smell of fish-laden waters and lily pads wafting through the air. The time was at hand to renew the spirit; but, like so many other things that seem so simple, there is a remarkable eruption when reality and nostalgia come face-to-face.
