Symantec operates in two diverse markets of the software sector: the security market and the storage software market. Symantec's security segment comprises products that protect the PC's and networks from threats. The storage segment comprises products that protect, store, and manage the e-business information resources.

Symantec has an extensive multi tiered network of distribution partners, retailers, original equipment manufacturers, system builders, educational institutions, and internet service providers supporting its software and services delivery. In addition to the indirect sales channels, Symantec also sells its software updates directly to its subscribers through the Internet. The company has operations in around 40 countries and research and development facilities in 12 countries. Symantec also operates multi language support facilities to address the customer queries on product implementation and related issues.

Security and data management segment caters to the compliance and security management, endpoint security, messaging management, and data protection management requirements of small to large scale e-business enterprises. These solutions allow users to secure, provision, backup, and remotely access their laptops, PCs, mobile devices, and servers. At the gateway and server levels, the company's products operate on various standard platforms like Windows, Linux, UNIX and Solaris.

Symantec's security and data management solutions include endpoint security, data protection and systems management, enterprise messaging management, compliance and security management, managed security services, and threat and early warning systems.

Consumer products segment offers services focused on security solutions, PC tuneup, and backup products to individual users and home offices. The primary consumer products of the company include Norton internet security, Norton antivirus and Norton 360. The Norton brand of consumer security software products provides protection for Windows and Macintosh platforms. These products safeguard the home and home office users from latest threats by blocking online identity theft, detecting and eliminating spyware, removing viruses and worms, and blocking hackers.
