T-Cell Receptor Recognition

Q-1 What led Zinkernagel and Dotherty to conclude that T-cell receptor recognition requires both antigen and MHC molecules?

Peter Doherty and Rolf Zinkernagel has been awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. Their discovery has, in turn, laid the foundation for understanding the general mechanisms used by the cellular immune system to recognize foreign microorganisms and self molecules. This discovery is of great relevance both to clinical medicine. It refers both to efforts to strengthen the immune response against invading microorganisms and certain forms of cancer, and efforts to reduce the effects of autoimmune reactions in inflammatory diseases such as rheumatic disease, multiple sclerosis and diabetes.

The two Nobel laureates conducted the research for which has now been awarded the Award in 1973-75 at the John Curtin School of Medical Research in Canberra, Australia, where Peter Doherty and held his position and that came from Rolf Zinkernagel Swiss researcher. While studying the response of mice to the virus, found that white blood cells (lymphocytes) must recognize both the virus and certain self molecules - the so-called major histocompatibility antigens - in order to destroy infected cells virus. This principle of simultaneous recognition of both their own and foreign molecules has since formed a foundation for understanding the specificity of cellular immune system.

Q-2 Can you draw or copy the basic structure of aB T-cell receptor and compare, with the basic structure of membrane-bound immunoglobulin.

The immune system is composed of different types of white blood cells, including T and B lymphocytes, whose common function is to protect the individual against infections through the elimination of invading microorganisms and infected cells. At the same time it must avoid damaging the body itself. What is required ...
