Tanzania Airport Authority (TAA)

Introduction

Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) was established under an Executive Agencies Act in 1999 as a semi autonomous government executive agency owning and operating 62 airports and airstrips in Tanzania mainland. Major airports are Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere International Airport, Mwanza airport, Mtwara airport and Arusha airport. There are other fifty-eight medium sized and small airports.

Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) is an Executive Agency formed by an Act of Parliament and established in 1999. The role of TAA is operating, managing, maintaining and developing government owned airports nationwide in a professional and cost effective manner.

It is the prime duty of TAA to provide comfortable, efficient, and secure services and facilities for the movement of passengers and cargo in its airports, to ensure that airport policies, regulations and procedures are executed in compliance with laid down international standards and to encourage present and prospective investors in airports towards contributing to national economic development.

TAA has significantly improved the water system and electricity supplies at Dar es Salaam International Airport (DIA), which is the country's gateway. In striving to support national economic development, the TAA Director General, Prosper Tesha, explains the investment opportunities available in airports and strongly welcomes serious investors. He states that the viable opportunities in airports are as follows - “Following the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) Act, Dar es Salaam International Airport, which is one of TAA portfolio, has identified land to operate in the Export Processing Zone.

This is an excellent opportunity for investors in relation to both domestic products and the export of foreign and domestic items. DIA is looking into possibilities of operating major shopping facilities whereby business and transit passengers will be afforded the opportunity of purchasing various items at very competitive prices.

Mwanza airport is another major opportunity for investors. The airport, located in the center of great lakes, is a hub to the surrounding countries - Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Kenya. Investors can participate in the Nile perch processing and export potential. Mwanza airport has the capacity to handle cargo freighters and its operations are ICAO compliant. This airport is located in the rich gold zone offering opportunities for mining investors as well as livestock and crop production, processing and exports.

Mtwara airport also offers major potential for investors in the EPZ. The facility is a main link to Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia in the south down as far as South Africa. Mtwara airport is accessible, also, to the Indian Ocean enabling the docking of ships from all over the world. The investment possibilities are seen in marine products, sea transport, cashew nut processing and exports, mining as well as crafts exports.
