"Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design"by Ben Shneiderman

The interface design is the backbone of any application. A good interface design is the one that provides a first rated experience to the end user in terms of usability, effectiveness and efficiency. Ben Shneiderman has presented eight rules that serves as guidelines for the improvement of interface design.

Rule 1: Strive For Consistency

One of the most important aspects to consider in the design of interfaces is the consistency to get over it, but it is also one of the rules most often broken. This rule emphasizes the importance of consistent sequences of actions in similar situations. Moreover, it says that similar terms and vocabulary should be employed in advertisements and help screens along with consistency in commands all through the interface design (Mandel, 1997, p.5-28).

Rule 2: Provide interface Shortcuts to Frequent Users

The increasing level of usage has also posed a challenge for the developers in terms of minimizing the number of shares and raising the rate of interface communication. Moreover, hidden commands, function keys, and some other macro facilities are very facilitating for a proficient user (Bailey, 1993, p.198-205).

Rule 3: Offer Informative Feedback.

This rule states that there must be a system of feedback for every operator action. The answer may be modest or unimportant, for frequent and minor actions use while for infrequent and major actions, the answer carries more significance and therefore should be more reliable. It is important that the user must know the state of the system and their actions. In other terms, the interface must provide a feedback without the chance of overloading the information (Bailey, 1993, p.198-205).

Rule 4: Design Dialog to Yield Progressive Closure

Sequential activities should be structured in segments with a start, middle and conclusion. The instructive feedback at the end of all the activities endows users with the contentment of achievement, high internal sense of relief, an indication to forgo the contingency plans and a hint that the path is open and clear to prepare for the next set of actions (Mandel, 1997, p.5-28).

Rule 5: Offer Simple Error Handling.

In case of errors, the interface should allow recovery of the system, either automatically or properly. It must inform the user, indicating the error occurred, the reasons and ways to solve it. Moreover, it should be consistent throughout the application in this task.
