Introduction

This essay is based on enhancement and transformation of the nonsense poem of Edward Lear's poem “The Owl and the Pussycat” and Alan Bennett's monologue “A Cream Cracker under the Settee”. The transformed names that I have suggested for these two poems are “The Hand of God- Monologue” for Edward Lear's poem “The Owl and the Pussycat” and “The life of Doris” for Alan Bennett's monologue “A Cream Cracker under the Settee”.

The Hand of God- Monologue (The Owl and the Pussycat)

The owl is in his early twenties. It is evening and he is lying around in his tree house.

The poem starts with an owl, which is in his early twenties and is lying around in his tree house in evening. It is a time when most of the people start thinking and plan out for their life and for this owl things were not coming in the similar way as he was in control of his parents. As, his parents want him to live according to their demands. On the 21st birthday of owl his parents gifted him will a present that he had not yet even thought about that was an arrange marriage. I (owl) found myself getting into a big trouble as in my view getting into such a relationship requires great responsibilities. It was extremely difficult for me to change the thinking pattern of my narrow minded and conservative parents. In their views after getting married I will be better able to make myself strong enough to face the challenges of the world as marriage is blessed with unlimited fortunes. It took a lot of efforts in convincing my parents to and getting respect of my decision in return, fortunately I managed it effectively. It was not an easy task for me to make my parents agree to my decision as my family morals and rituals were very rigid. I managed myself to leave home and explore the opportunities and flavours of world .

It was not an easy task for me to leave my home in search of new opportunities as I would be facing a completely new world that is filled with challenges and difficulties. Everything was different such as culture, norms, traditions and values. There were times when I found myself in great trouble and wished to go back home but the issue of arrange marriage kept on reminding me and motivating me that I should not stop right there and I should move on. Various problems came into my way and pushed me to realise that when we are with our parents we are unaware of the issues that our parents are going through (Larvor, 1994, p.233).

This is mainly due to the fact that they never share their problems with us and always keep on fulfilling our demands according to the ...
