Thales is the first philosopher, scientist and mathematician although his occupation was that of an engineer. He is believed to have been the teacher of Anaximander (611 BC - 545 BC) and was the first natural philosopher of the Irish School. However, none of his writing survives so it is difficult to determine their views or to be confident about their mathematical discoveries. Indeed it is unclear whether the works he wrote at all and if he did not doubt that were lost by the time of Aristotle, who do not have access to all the writings of Thales. ...
