THE BATTLE OF SOMME

The great clash of the Somme, which is also called the offense of Somme, was fought during the World War 1 in France, in the city of Somme, on the edge of the Somme River. The clash started after an attack by the French and British forces against the Germans. The Germans had occupied a large area of France since the invasion in 1914. This clash between the German and French/British forces was one of the prime clashes of the World War I. When the battle had finished towards the end of the year 1916, the armed forces, which were involved in the clash, had a huge number of fatalities, which is expected to be more than one million, this was one of the one of the deadliest battles ever fought.

The planning for the attack in Somme was done in the strategic meeting of the Allied forces at Chantilly, Oise in the late spring of the year 1915. This meeting was head by General Joseph Joffre, who was the commanding officer of the French military; the Allied forces had reached a consensus on the rigorous battle against the Central Powers in the year 1916. The clash of the Somme, was supposed to be the British-French input in the common battle, that battle was supposed to make a crack in the German forces, and the Allied forces could have gone for the final blow. After the attack by the Germans on Verdun in 1916, the Allied army was strained to change their strategy accordingly. The British forces showed the way in the Somme battle, the French input was also crucial.
