Inherent Vice President has been well received among critics, particularly for its overall appeal. In a generally favorable review, Michiko, the New York Times' Kakutani called "Pynchon Lite", describing it as "a simple detective story shaggy dog friendly faces drug addicts against the LAPD and its" agents counterinsurgency, "a novel where the paranoia is not so much a political or metaphysical status was a byproduct of heavy smoking weed. The setting is Los Angeles during the winter 1969 and summer of 1970, the arrest and trial of the Manson Family appears throughout the novel as a current event. 'Doc' Larry window, private investigator and 'Porrero', is visited by his ex-girlfriend Fay Shasta Hepworth, who is now having an affair with real estate mogul Mickey Wolfmann. Shasta asks Doc to help thwart a plot allegedly hatched by Mickey Sloane's wife and her lover, Warbling Riggs, Mickey admitted to a mental health institution. Soon after, Doc is asked to find the whereabouts of Glen Charlock, one of the bodyguards of Mickey, by Tariq Khalil, who says Glen owe money after their time together in prison.

Doc visits one of the events of Mickey, but is beaten unconscious and awakens to find himself being questioned by his nemesis LAPD old, 'Bigfoot' Detective Christian Bjornsen, which reports that Doc Glen Charlock has been shot dead and Mickey has disappeared. Later, Doc is visited by the hope of Harlingen, the widow of a musician named Coy Harlingen, Doc wants to investigate rumors that Coy is still alive. Doc finds Coy in a nightclub, but to learn that Doc is investigating Mickey, Coy says Doc on the 'Golden Fang', an old schooner suspected of putting the rather mysterious in the harbor, and on which Mickey and Shasta is rumored to have departed. Doc learns that Coy has been working for the government as an informant and agent provocateur, but is not allowed contact with his family. Puck also discovers that Beaverton had changed shifts with Glen Charlock on the day of the death of Glen, and Mickey had been working at the time of his disappearance on a plan to atone for their sins as a ruthless businessman.
