Abstract

The analysis of this study aims to explore the dangers of genetically modified organisms in a holistic context. The core objective of this research is on dangers of genetically modified organisms and the severity of the dangers as compared to the perceived benefits. This research analyzes varieties of dangers that are associated with genetically modified organisms. The dangers caused by the genetically modified organisms are not restricted to health related hazards; but, genetically modified organisms also cause environmental dangers. Finally the research describes criticism at genetically modified organisms and controversies related to genetically modified organisms in order to provide a platform for future researches and presents diverse conceptions regarding the dangers associated with genetically modified organisms.

Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to enlighten and explore the dangers of genetically modified organisms. This paper will present diverse hazards that are associated with the genetically modified organisms. Moreover, the study will also explore several issues and ethical considerations that are caused by genetically modified organisms. The introduction of genetically engineered plants and animals have, at times, generated quite a bit of controversy. Developed by the Monsanto Corporation, MON810 is corn genetically engineered with the toxin BT, which is poisonous to certain insects, including certain insect pests that feed on the corn plant. Although originally cleared by the European Union as safe to grow and consume, several European member nations have since banned the cultivation or sale of MON810 within their borders.

As genetic engineering matured in the late 1900s, a chorus of protests emerged. Opposition is based on moral, emotional, or religious grounds, and some on fears of practical risks. Moral criticisms of genetic engineering arise from the belief that altering the genetic makeup of living things is wrong, regardless of its risks and benefits. One of the most controversial aspects of genetic engineering is the possibility of inserting human genes into other animals, for example, using human growth hormone in pigs to produce larger animals. The twenty-four religious leaders noted that this process raises unique moral and ethical questions.

Dangers of Genetically Modified Organisms

Bovine somatotropin (BST), or bovine growth hormone (BGH), met with more heated reactions. BST is a nonsteriodal hormone, produced in the pituitary glands of cows, that regulates metabolism, and indirect the production of milk in dairy cows. Scientists with Monsanto Corporation were able to insert DNA for the active protein in BST into the no virulent bacterium E. coli, thereby synthesizing a pure form of recombinant BST (rBST) that could be injected into dairy cows. It was found that BST-treated cows could increase milk production by up to 40 percent with only a small increase in feed consumption (around 15%). Again, what appeared to be a benefit for farmers (more milk and greater profits) evoked widespread concern and ethical critique (Nelson, 2001, 89).
