THE FIRM

Introduction

John Ray Grisham, Jr., was born in the city of Jonesboro, Arkansas & he spent his childhood in the South of Arkansas. The father of John Grisham, i.e. John Grisham Sr., was a construction worker in a nearby place. His family kept moving often from one place to another during his childhood. During his childhood, his family travelled to Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The mother of John Grisham preferred reading for her children, and to encourage reading habits in her children, she made sure that her children get library cards as soon as possible, whenever they moved to a new place. John attended continued his high school studies in a small town outside Memphis, i.e. Southaven, Mississippi. According to Grisham, his writing abilities grew because of the fact that he was born in a family of readers and storytellers. He had a strong desire to play baseball on the professional level, and he wasted early years of his college life by concentrating on playing baseball, and used to ignore his studies. When he found it was not possible for him to pursue a career in baseball, he took accounting as his major subject and graduated from Mississippi State University in the year 1977. He attended the school of law school at the University of Mississippi and received his law degree in the year 1981. In the same year, he married Renee Jones and had two children with her. Grisham used to live with his wife, in Charlottesville, Virginia, for about six months and for the remaining six months of the year, he spends this time at Oxford, Mississippi. Grisham says that he coach his son for baseball for six months in a year and then continues his writing habits for the next six months. (Michelle 1993, pp 70)

Between the years 1981 and 1991, John Grisham used to practice law in the city of Southaven. He had also served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from the year 1984 to the year 1990. Even though, John Grisham could only achieve modest success in his career as a lawyer, he had become misanthropic in duration and the field of literature and writing got his attention. When he wrote his first ever novel, i.e. A Time to Kill, he had worked really very hard for it, he used to rise at 5:00 a.m. every day and used to write for about two hours every day, and it took him about three years to finish his first ever book. This book was not a success and only managed to sell five thousand copies.

His phenomenal success as a writer began when he produced his second novel, i.e. The Firm, which immediately became, the best seller and even a Hollywood was made on the theme of “The firm.” This novel was one of the many of novels of Grisham to have become motion pictures.
