The Yangtze River takes an important part in Chinese history. During the 40 million years history of the life and 50,000 years history of human civilization, Yangtze River, a mother river of the Chinese people, brings up billions of people. Traces of human activity in the area can be found as far as 2 million years ago. The Yangzi River has great importance in the history. Yangzi River is China's first river with the length of 5800 km which flows through Qinghai, Tibet, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu provinces and Shanghai. Drainage area is ??more than 180 million square kilometers that accounts for more than one fifth of the territory and covers most parts of southern China.

In the origin and formation of Chinese civilization there are two completely different views. One view is that Chinese civilization originated in the Yellow River and then spread to other parts; this is the monistic view on the origin of Chinese civilization.
