The Holiness Code

Introduction

Holiness Code arose in Judaism after the Babylonian exile that is sixth century BC. The central theme was these words: "You shall be holy as the Lord your God is holy" (Leviticus 19.2). It was like God. As God was holy, the people of Israel should be (Levine, 189). Their way of life had to be grounded in holiness. One of the Characteristics of holiness was the separation. It was understood that to be holy, Israel must be separated from any contamination. This produced distinctions:

Pure and impure;

Clean and soiled;

Sacred and profane;

Jew and Gentile;

Righteous and a sinner.
