This paper highlights the life, achievement, death and controversies of Michael Jackson, often referred to as the King of Pop Music. Popular music, also known as “pop,” developed from early rock and roll. Although whites mostly dominated early pop music, African Americans have played an increasingly greater role in the genre. In fact, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, black pop artists dominate popular music. They have also taken the music in new directions with musical forms such as hip-hop and dance pop (Lewis, 2005).
