The baby young man is wholesome and the new parents are arranged to take their son home. But Ashima and Ashoke are shocked to discover that they will not leave the clinic before they give their child a lawful name. The customary naming method in their families is to have an elder give the new baby a name. They have selected Ashima's grandmother for this honor. The grandmother composes down the name on a part of paper and mails it to them. But the letter not ever reaches and shortly after, the grandmother pass aways. In the meantime, Ashoke proposes the name of Gogol. He chooses this title for two reasons. First, it is the title of his very popular author, the well known Russian author. The second reason is that Ashoke, before he was married, had been in a very grave accident. The train he was travelling in had derailed. Many people died. Ashoke had broken his back and could not move. He had been reading Gogol just before the accident. He had a page of that publication clutched in his hand.
