The Nile Valley Civilization

Introduction

The Nile valley civilization is one of the oldest civilizations. It is also known as the cradle of civilization. The very first people in this civilization are blacks. These people came into this valley through Nubia. These people came into the valley and inhabited it making different cities. Moroe and Thebes are two of the earliest cities of the civilization and became the religious centers at the time. There were two major religions that were followed in these cities. They worshiped the God Ammon. This was the major religion whereby Ammon was the god of gods. This valley started at the northern most peak. This was the time which was marked by Neolithic Revolution (Williams, p. 207).

The valley is beautiful and has many scenic sites. It was this civilization which grew from the two cities mentioned earlier and then later transformed into what we know as Egypt today. The very concept of civilization was initiated by the Nile River civilization.

Geography and its impact

The Nile River is situated at a very critical location. The valley always endured a flood. This flood resulted in ample supply of fresh drinking water and fertile soil for the inhabitants of the area. This also helped in washing away the wastes of the area. In addition, the river has many seas that surround the valley. This means that it was a well protected territory. The valley was protected from both disease and war.

Because of the readily available fresh water, the people of the region capitalized on the opportunity and used it as a means of irrigation through digging ditches in the ground. These ditches served as a means of water supply. Through this had been a desert for many centuries in the past. The river provided water for the area and food in ample supply (Salama, p. 899).

Economy of the Nile River civilization

The Nile valley civilization was agrarian in nature. A major reason for this was the fact that valley was very close to the river Nile which provided them with water perfect for irrigation and farming. Once there was a flood, it would make the land fertile for the next year. This means that the people had food for the next year if they worked diligently on the farms. They people realized that agriculture was a very key aspect of their survival. This not only provided for their eating requirement but also served as a means of economic progress for them.

Social structure

As concerns the social structure of the Nile valley civilization we may observe that the civilization was based on kingdom whereby the king who ruled over the people had supreme authority and would take all the decisions. Not only the king but also the female who accompanied the king, usually the queen, was revered with equal respect. They were considered to be the rulers of the land and given their due respect.
