Conversation is an art. There are certain aspects that are the driving force in spoken English, and negation is one such major aspect. The role of negation has been huge while conversing; however, its proper usage is not known by many. While negating, speakers do not consider the element of politeness, which is why the aspect of ambiguity exists. One major part of negation in spoken English language is of the contrastive discourse markers (CDMs). This aspect is present while people talk to each other and do not contribute to the semantic meaning of the discourse segment. 'On the contrary' is a major type of contrastive discourse marker and is an element of negation that is present in the spoken English (Fraser, 1999).
