Introduction

What can economics tell us about science and art of happiness? The answer to this question a lot. In 2004 Layard wrote the report - which is available on the Internet - in which he noted that despite improvements in the economy and providing health care, we are not happier than we were fifty years ago. He said that psychological problems and mental illness are among the main causes of suffering. At a time when political action only seems to happen when we can attach a dollar value and potential savings, he added that the human suffering imposes a serious burden on the economy. At the same time, we already have good evidence that the tools to work with all that psychological stress is already there. In his report, he went on to suggest that the United Kingdom needs to 10.000 new cognitive behavioral therapists to major dent in all this suffering. What was different in that he went to show that these costs made good economic sense.

The book is divided into two parts. The first great overview of factors affecting happiness, and the invasion in the English utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham, who believed that personal and social decisions, everything should be based on the idea of creating a great happiness for the greatest number of people. In the second part Layard discusses his report and prescriptions for action. One of the drawbacks of this book is that it does not stand by itself. Its action plan will be easier to understand if you read the report.
