Introduction

The Three Strike Laws are not very fair or effective. Initially, this law sounded extraordinary; its main aim was to eliminate all violent offenders from the street, but it culminated in the undesired outcomes that were not even anticipated before. The research showed that there has been an increasing number of people, who were life sentenced, after founding them guilty of a minor crime for their third felony. Another noteworthy aftermath was the promotion of disproportional of African Americans in prison under this law. It has been found that African Americans have been a major target of this law, which has led to increase the number of Black, in the prisons. The long term of sentences also resulted in increase number of aged prisoners who need special medical care which has increased the cost for the system.

Discussion

While many politicians have called the strike laws as 'ultimate get thought on crime measure', and 78% of the Americans, according to Gallup, support these laws on the basis that local courts do not penalize the convicts in exactly the same proportion to their crimes, there are others who criticize the three strike law for prison overcrowding.
