Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of “Self Assessment” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on “Self Assessment” and its relation with “Personal Development”. The research also analyzes many aspects of “Self Assessment” and tries to gauge its effect on “Personal Development”. Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for “Self Assessment” and tries to describe the overall effect of “Self Assessment” on “Personal Development”

Introduction

In September 2003, following a period of piloting and modification, generic marking criteria, for use with written assignments, was implemented across all Divisions within the School of Health Studies in a northern university. These were the Divisions of Nursing, Midwifery and Women's Health, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Health Care investigations (multi-professional) and Dementia investigations (multi-professional). This criterion would provide uniformity to assessment processes across the School and enhance equity across Divisions. Student self-assessment (SSA) is a perform broadly sustained by the publications as having some advantages that will aid the learner in discovering and had been effectively used in the Division of Physiotherapy for some years. Following a review of the literature and school wide consultation, an SSA form was developed to work in union with the assessment criteria/feedback form.

Literature Review

Student self-assessment - an overview of the literature

It is contended that self-assessment is possibly one of the most important abilities that students require for productive discovering and for future professional development and lifelong learning. It equips the learner with the abilities for autonomy in discovering and expert perform; skills that encompass critical perception and reflectivity. McDonald and Boud (2003) found that scholar involvement in assessing their own work especially enhanced discovering and achievement. Mitchell and Sturton (1993) report that the association between student and tutor assessing is usually good while Brown et al. (1997) proposed that this is more unquestionable in the sciences than the arts. It is not clear how this may relate to health care practitioners, who draw upon both art and research in their studies.

There is a tradition in HE for feedback on learning to be communicated in only one direction - from tutor to learner. The span to which notes thus broadcast are read, understood and acted on on upon, is not clear (Higgins et al., 2001) and Ivanic et al. (2000) assert that the teacher's response, in terms of feedback, must be interpreted and internalized by the student before it can impact on further study. They propose that improving the feedback ...
