Executive Summary

In this study we try to explore the concept of performance management in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on performance management and its relation with Total Quality Management (TQM). The research also analyzes many aspects of performance management and tries to gauge its effect on Total Quality Management (TQM). Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for performance management and tries to describe the overall effect of performance management on Total Quality Management (TQM).

Research on TQM implementation has, in the main, been dominated by large companies' experiences with organisations like Toyota, TNT, Motorola, Hewlett Packard, Rank Xerox, SONY, being cited frequently.

The main outcome of the study is to analyse the ways to enhance the performance excellence in business through Total Quality Management (TQM).

Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to research and prepare a report critically reflecting on the application of best practice in the business sector in relation to Performance management through total quality management (TQM). Excellence in business occurs when a company constantly and regularly takes effective measures and action strategies that lead to the achievement of objectives. The research is done on Toyota.

The objective of Total Quality Management is to achieve a process of continuous quality improvement for a better knowledge and control of the whole system (product or service design, suppliers, materials, distribution, information, etc.) So that proceeds received by consumers constantly correct the conditions for use (zero defects in quality), and improve internal processes so as to produce goods without defects to the first, involving the elimination of waste to reduce costs, improve all internal processes and procedures, attention to customers and suppliers, delivery times and post-sales services (Deming, 2006).

Performance Management

Performance management is an ongoing process where the manager / supervisor and employee working together to plan, monitor and review the objectives of the employee's work and its overall contribution to the organization. (Aubrey, 1999)

The basic pillars of strength of any society have always been identified as land, labour and capital. But we cannot undermine the considerable influence that the exercises knowledge management on the achievement of organizational goals.

Performance management is a process that allows managers and employees work together to plan, monitor and review the objectives of an employee's work and its overall contribution to the organization.

This process goes far beyond a simple annual performance assessment: performance management is an ongoing process to set goals, evaluate progress and provide ongoing support (coaching) and feedback to ensure that employees achieve their objectives, particularly with regard to their careers. (Goetsch and Davis, 2001)

To efficiently implement a strategy for performance management, a need to understand what performance management is why it is so important and how to make work in the real world. Although concept seems simple, its effective implementation can be more complex. (Bou, 2005)
