Introduction

Leadership is a phenomenon that occurs in all human groups and leading thinkers and writers interested in all cultures for hundreds of years. Leadership is a phenomenon of group influence, which is essential to add individual efforts to achieve the objectives shared by the group. It is also a management tool that assists the nurse in coordinating the team in dealing with conflicts that may emerge in the workplace and in the decision process (Laschinger, 1999, 28).

In the context of current shortages, it is crucial to any hospital, to maximize the satisfaction of nurses and their involvement in the organization, in order to maintain their membership in the hospital and provide care that meets the quality requirements, while ensuring patient satisfaction. Nursing leadership innovative and dynamic can cause profound changes in the core values and attitudes of nurses, would achieve these results. In this paper, we are going to discuss the application of transformational leadership by nurses in health care system.

To be effective in the long term, today's leaders can no longer be content to promote the exchange contribution, reward their employees, but should cause profound changes in attitudes, beliefs and core values of employees. In the nursing department, the nursing leadership becomes more complex, requiring knowledge and expertise, critical thinking and specific inter-relational skills (Thyer, 2003, 73). This complexity of the roles held by leaders in nursing makes it more difficult to choose qualified people to fill leadership positions, and this, particularly at the base, head nurses holding a hinge function in the hospital: their dynamism, leadership and competence are often the difference in organizational climate.

The head nurse: cure or Manager?

To date, it remains difficult to obtain a common understanding of desired functions and powers of the head nurse. However, the current trend is to reduce its involvement in the provision of direct patient care in favour of the management unit. The role of the head nurse is evolving gradually towards a role as guarantor of the quality of care, including ensuring continuity of care by an appropriate distribution of patients between providers. The nurses themselves alter their growing expectations of their superiors: they accept that the head nurse is not a source of clinical expertise, provided that it meets their needs by guiding them towards obtaining the necessary resources. The role of the head nurse is much more a leadership role for, not to control and supervise, but to motivate, train and ensure the development of nurses in the unit.

Specifically, the research nurse recognizes that the head nurses effectively making use of a method of dynamic and innovative leadership among nurses raise the desire to provide the extra mile to what is normally expected of them, promote job satisfaction and they still the desire to get involved emotionally with regard to the institution and its missions.
