U.S Foreign Policy

Abstract

The foreign policy of USA is controversial today. The focus is towards the national security more than ensuring world peace. This paper discusses the affect of the foreign policy on the relationships of U.S with the world. The stance on war on terror has turned the policy into a selfish practices for national defense. The paper identifies such [practices and the criticism that the foreign policy receives instead of creating integration between the world and United States.

Introduction

The U.S foreign policy has been controversial throughout history. Currently, the foreign policy if USA is going through a turbulent period as it is becoming more harmful to the relationship between U.S.A and the rest of the world because the focus of the U.S foreign policy towards world peace, human rights and world democracy has been lost. Whereas, the only significant corner of the policy seems to be the protection of national security.

Traditional Perspectives

It is important to review the traditional perspective related to the international relations, foreign policy, and the world politics. The following are some of the concepts that may help analyze the thesis and justify it.

National Security

The term national security is a difficult concept to define. The multiple interpretations throughout history have generated confusion affecting the creation of a system, a doctrine or an effective way to explain concretely what national security means. It is common to find within the branch of science some difficulty in social concepts clearly delineate their nature dynamically. On the one hand, security is a concept which is well may be called central or nuclear in international relations theory, but for another is a term difficult to handle because there is not remotely agree on its definition. For better understanding, the issue must be analyzed from a perspective that is flexible and changing, and not as an abstract representation (Smith, 2007). The security of a State builds and adapts circumstances, and modified according to the needs each country and adapt to the contexts of history, culture and society. Their domestic situation and international environment make the interpretation of the threats and national objectives that are always different. The concept of national security has evolved and adapted over the history, but has always remained a priority for all States world. Every nation must be able to defend both its territorial sovereignty and its people and its national interests (Shawcross, 1979). There is a latent sense of protection generated in one state against those threats from the outside or to the possibility an internal crisis that destabilizes the order. The meaning of security is to be free from danger or concern. A feeling of insecurity grows in a country which is vulnerable, and unable to safeguard its integrity as a nation. The ideals present in the security agenda is the balance and peace that are represented in capacity of war and ability to ensure internal and external control in the country.
