Solar Energy in U.A.E

Introduction

During a keynote session this year at the World Future Energy Summit, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon made two pledges to the world that were quite bold and impressive. The first was a pledge to end the fuel poverty that has consumed the entire world and the other was to have sustainable energy for the entire world by the year 2030.The introduction of massive amounts of projects for the development of solar energy by the UAE, along with certain other Middle East countries, could play a huge role in turning UAE into one of the biggest exporters of the solar energy. After oil, this is the second thing which the Arab countries could export on large scale, as the developments of solar energy are swiftly becoming a major priority for the energy policies of the UAE.

Discussion

There is no doubt in saying that UAE is the leading nation of the world when it comes to the development of alternative energy. The integrated energy strategy of Dubai for the year 2030, promises to generate almost twelve percent of the overall energy for Dubai, with the help of nuclear power, along with another twelve percent from clean coal. UAE alone have eleven projects, which cost more than 10 billion dollars. Saudi Arabia has eleven projects of alternative energy, which worth 8.6 billion dollars. Kuwait is right behind Saudi Arabia with ten projects under the development process, costing almost 3.4 billion dollars, according to an estimation seven of these projects are about to begin at the end of this year. Bahrain is planning to introduce three projects for the development of renewable energy, costing 4.1 billion dollars. Qatar has three projects worth 3.3 billion dollars (Abdalla et.al, 1988, pp.63-77).

UAE (solar energy production plans)

UAE is on the top of the list with eleven projects of alternative energy under their belt. The total cost of these projects is almost 10 billion dollars. They have invested millions of dollars into projects that will be completed within the coming years. One example of such an initiative is the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Makhdoom Solar Park which is the first of its kind in the entire world. This project will be under the supervision of DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, and the cost of the project is almost 3.3 billion US Dollars and shall be capable of producing 1000 MW of solar power upon completion. By the end of 2013 however, the park shall be operational on a limited capacity and start producing 10 MW of solar power. The aim of these projects is to increase the energy global energy supply and to sustain it as well (Stromsta, 2011).
