User Interface Evaluation - Microsoft's Office 2007

Abstract

Aclient interface (UI) for software merchandise was evaluated prior to its issue by four assemblies, each applying a different method: heuristic evaluation, software Guidelines, cognitive walkthroughs, and Usability testing. Heuristic evaluation by some UI specialists discovered the most serious troubles with the smallest allowance of effort, whereas they also described a large number of low-priority problems. The relative advantages of all the methods are considered, and suggestions for improvements in the methods are offered.

Introduction

The challenge for Microsoft in revamping agency was to better coordinate all the choices accessible without contrary impacting productivity. For new users, that's a particularly important goal, since the menus and toolbars in current versions may appear to be a mismatch. We have conducted interview with 3 users of MS Office 2007

You'll likely get used to the new interface inside a couple of hours; if you like it, although, is a different story. New users will benefit most, since they won't have to change existing habits. For advanced and power users, the change may be a bit more disconcerting, at least initially. They have put Office 2007 through its paces, exploring new features, both Office-wide and in specific apps, and taking a particularly close look at the new SharePoint Server 2007. (Lewis, 2007))

Usability Evaluation

Some features have been radically changed since Office 2003 - or have disappeared completely. The ability to add a very popular folder to the My locations bar is no longer discovered in the File Save and document Open dialog boxes. Instead, you navigate to the folder, right-click on a blank location in the My locations bar and select Add from the pop-up menu. Other My locations features remain unchanged: For demonstration, you can't remove the default shortcuts such as My articles without editing the registry.

Task Panes, which offered an attractive list of the last files used (an alternative to the file list in the File menu) in Office 2003, is no more (though it does appear in some functions, such as mail merge). (Microsoft KB 924074, 2008)
