Introduction

Walt Whitman was born in Long isle, New York, the child of a Quaker carpenter. Whitman's mother was descended from Dutch farmers. In Whitman's childhood there were slaves engaged on the farm. Whitman was from the beginning full of love for nature. He read the classics in his youth and was inspired by writers like Goethe, Hegel, Carlyle and Emerson.
